The Little Black Dress

The little black dress, or LBD, is a timeless fashion piece that has come to symbolise sophistication and elegance. Its origins can be traced back to 1926 when the renowned fashion designer Coco Chanel introduced the concept of a simple, yet stylish black dress that could be worn on various occasions.

The perfect outfit

What sets the little black dress apart from other dresses is its ability to effortlessly transition from day to night. With the right accessories, it can be transformed from a casual outfit suitable for work or brunch to a glamorous ensemble for an evening event. This adaptability has made the little black dress a staple in every woman’s wardrobe, as it allows for endless possibilities, saving us from the struggle of finding the perfect outfit for every occasion.

Chanel’s innovation went beyond just the design; she also revolutionized the concept of black as a fashionable colour. Prior to her influence, black was primarily associated with mourning and reserved solely for sombre occasions. Chanel, however, believed that black possessed an inherent elegance and power that transcended its connotations.

She stated, “Black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”

Moreover, the little black dress holds a universal appeal as it flatters all body types and skin tones. Its simplicity and understated elegance make it a fashion choice that never goes out of style, regardless of the passing trends.

The little black dress is more than just a fashion item; it is a representation of empowerment, versatility, and timeless style.

It’s an iconic piece in the world of fashion.

I was lucky enough to visit the V&A in London to see Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifesto which is currently running until February 2024. Within the show you can see her original designs and learn the whole history of the LBD. Catch a glimpse of it here.

Our rails are filling up with little black dresses from fabulous high street labels to luxurious designer brands that are ready to be reworn and loved again.
